Many people ask me about my StompahyX revision surgery, which I had in 2008 some 5-years after my gastric bypass weight-loss surgery in 2003. People are particularly interested in my experience on the day of surgery and my experience in the weeks following the surgery - what did I eat and how did I feel?
The following is a "blow by blow" account of my first week of recovery following the StomaphyX procedure. I point this out as valuable because there are no published meal plans for the 8-week StomaphyX recovery period.
You can read the recommended food and nutrition guidelines for the StomaphyX procedure.
StomaphyX Post Op Day 1
I am having stomach pain and also coughing up mucus which is thick and brown following my StomaphyX. I seem to have fluid in my ears as I hear and feel a crackling noise when I blow my nose. I called the StomaphyX surgeon for antibiotics and he gave me Levaquin, which I need to crush. I am taking Tylenol with Codeine for post StomaphyX pain and it seems to work good enough. It makes me sleepy and I took a long nap today. My throat continues to hurt from the StomaphyX endoscope.
Here is my food plan for today, which I track on fitday.com.
- B: 1 scoop Syntrax nectar whey protein drink with 3tsp magnesium citrate and 2tbs liquid vitamins, vit. B12
- L: 1 scoop ON whey protein drink with 1c vanilla soy milk and 2tbs natural peanut butter and 1 tsp 100% cocoa and 2 packets Splenda blended with ice cubes in blender
- D: 1/2 Campbell's cheddar cheese soup, undiluted
- Metabolic: 1/2 Campbell's cheddar cheese soup, undiluted
This provides 927 cals, 48g fat, 52g carb, 80g protein.
Overall, this menu is too high in calories, fat, and carbs, and too low in protein. I'll have to plan better in the future so as to maximize the benefit from my StomaphyX.
StomaphyX Post Op Day 2
I have had very little to eat since Tuesday -- the day of my StomaphyX -- and have only lost .5lbs. I continue to have mild pain in my stomach from the StomaphyX and chest and back hurt, and I have a headache. I am very stressed and perhaps this is making me hold onto the weight. I will go for a walk today to see if that helps both my mood and weight loss.
Here is my food plan for today.
- B: 1 scoop Syntrax nectar whey protein drink with 3tsp magnesium citrate and 2oz liquid vitamins, vitB12.
- L: 1 Profect bullet protein drink
- D: 1 scoop ON whey protein drink with 1/2c soy milk and 2tbs natural peanut butter and 1 tsp 100% cocoa and 2 packets Splenda with ice blended in a blender
- Metabolic: 1 Profect bullet protein drink
This provides 654 cals, 22.3g fat, 26.8g carb, 92.2g protein.
StomaphyX Post Op Day 3
I guess that the slow-paced 50min walk I took yesterday helped because I am down 4lbs overnight. Woo hoo StomaphyX is working.
I had headaches yesterday when I ate dinner... perhaps I put too much in my new StomaphyX pouch at once. I will slow it down today. The nutritionist recommended 2 oz at a time until my protein drink was finished, not to take longer than 2hrs to consume.
I had moderate pain on and off again throughout the night in my stomach/chest from the StomaphyX. This likely would have been abated by taking my pain med but I was too worn out to go downstairs and get it. It has been a difficult past two days as we had a family tragedy.
I am having back pain but this may be from the back disease I have rather than the StomaphyX. I feel tired and will rest shortly.
This morning I also am a little hungry, so I ate some of my Syntrax nectar whey lemon off the end of a spoon. It reminds me of salt water taffy and is quite pleasant when you have the urge to chew. If you try this, be sure to take only a 1/2 tsp at a time and chew it well so it dissolves in your mouth before entering your new StomaphyX pouch.
I have found the Profect bullets to be quite unpalatable so today I will mix half a serving in with my Syntrax. Since they are all citrus flavors it should blend together tastefully enough.
Here is my food plan for today.
- B: Syntrax nectar whey protein drink with Profect protein bullet and magnesium citrate and liquid vitamins blended together with ice and spring water.
- L: Syntrax nectar whey protein drink with Profect protein bullet and magnesium citrate and liquid vitamins blended together with ice and spring water.
- D: 1/2 c Campbell's bean with bacon soup, pureed
- Metabolic: ON whey protein drink with Spring water
This provides 608 cals, 5.5g fat, 32gcarb, 107g protein.
StomaphyX Post Op Day 4
I am slowly creeping to a BMI of 29, which will put me back in the overweight category vs. obese. This is my first goal from this StomaphyX surgery and I will be happy when I reach it.
Today I have a headache. This may be from the stress and sadness I have been under due to a family tragedy rather than the StomaphyX. I don't know. I noticed last night that I had head hunger. This is my typical response to depression. I ate two sugar free popsicles. In the past, before my RNY Gastric Bypass, it would have been an eating binge that went on for hours. I am so grateful for my StomaphyX surgery.
I continue to burp a lot. The literature that I received at my surgeon's office provided by the StomaphyX manufacturer said not to burp?!?! How is one not to burp? I wonder why I have so much gas.
I am pretty satisfied with the liquid diet... the soup yesterday was delicious and a nice change from the protein drinks. I get a little hungry, its not like the total lack of appetite that I experienced after my RNY gastric bypass, but I find that I am easily satisfied with a small liquid meal as a result of my StomaphyX. My StomaphyX surgeon said that the StomaphyX experience would be similar to my RNY gastric bypass 3 mos. out. My StomaphyX surgeon also did my RNY gastric bypass in 2003.
Here is my meal plan for today. I commit my food every day on FitDay.com and to my Overeaters Anonymous (OA) sponsor:
- B: 1 scoop ON 100% whey protein powder blended with 4oz soy milk and ice.
- L: 1 scoop Syntrax nectar whey protein drink with Profect protein bullet and magnesium citrate and liquid vitamins blended together with ice and spring water.
- D: 1/2 c seafood bisque with 1/4c soy milk, 2 frozen popsicles
- Metabolic: herbal tea with evaporated milk and Splenda, Jell-O with protein powder added
- Metabolic: 1/2 c canned condensed cheddar cheese soup, undiluted
This provides 814 cals, 24.7g fat, 44gcarb, 104.6g protein.
StomaphyX Post Op Day 5
Here is my meal plan:
- B: Syntrax nectar whey protein drink with Profect protein bullet and magnesium citrate and liquid vitamins blended together with ice and spring water.
- Snack: 8oz iced coffee with 8 oz soy milk and 4 packets Splenda.
- L: ON 100% whey protein powder blended with 4oz soy milk and ice.
- D: 1/2 c cream of chicken soup undiluted with 1/2c soy milk.
- Metabolic: Jell-O with protein powder added, 1/4c Hormel turkey chili no beans, pureed
This provides 825 cals, 18.9g fat, 48.3g carb, 117.6g protein.
Note that neither coffee or tomatoes are recommended by EndoGastric Solutions for EsophyX patients at this point post surgery but they are OK for StomaphyX patients per my StomaphyX surgeon. I point this out because there is no published meal plans for StomaphyX patients currently so many follow the EsophyX plan. The chili seems to be grumbling around a bit and I won't try it again for a few awhile.
StomaphyX Post Op Day 6
I am feeling very tired. I do not know if this is from the StomaphyX surgery or because I am depressed, stressed, and worn out over family tragedies. I think probably the later. Other than that I feel fine. However, I am noticing my sense of smell seems much stronger since the StomaphyX surgery?!?!?!
This heightened sense of smell is bothering me right now as I can smell with intensity the grilled cheese and tomato sandwich my husband just made. It is making me crave food. This brings back the memory of how delicious food tasted post RNY gastric bypass when I was finally able to eat whole foods. I remember others who'd had the surgery called it being able to taste your food.
I look forward to that reward again after my StomaphyX surgery and look forward to preparing fresh and delicious meals. Hopefully the herbs in my garden will still be growing. And I'll go to the Farmer's Market for all of my wonderful fresh produce every week. Its very enjoyable to walk around the market and I'll build up my steps!
步骤……我戴上计步器/营养师(the one who is part of my StomaphyX surgeon's practice). She wants me to get 5,000 steps a day. Sadly, since I work from home, my normal is 1,000 steps per day. When I am able to exercise again I'll have to dust off my elliptical in the basement and make a vow to use it every day. Until then, 1/2 hour or so walks are good.
Here is my meal plan for today:
- B: 1/2 c condensed cheddar cheese soup undiluted with 1/2 c broccoli pureed. Followed by 1 scoop of Syntrax Whey Nectar lemon mixed with a few tbs. of water to create a chewy little confection similar to saltwater taffy. The reason for adding the protein in this way is that my nutritionist wants my meals to have twice as many protein g as carb g since I am insulin resistant... a condition that causes oneself to hold onto weight. Balancing the ratio of protein to cards is key to shedding the pounds.
- L: Protein drink made of Syntrax Whey Nectar lemon, liquid vitamins, magnesium citrate lemon, and 1/2 serving of Profect pineapple orange.
- Metabolic: Popsicle, sugar free
- D: 1/2 c low fat vanilla yogurt blended with 1 scoop ON Gold Standard 100% Whey chocolate and ice
- 代谢:花草茶2包代糖和1/4 scoop Syntrax Whey Nectar lemon. Don't make the water too hot or the Syntrax will come out like scrambled eggs.
This meal provides: 742 calories 17.4g fat 46.1g carbs 102.3g protein
StomaphyX Post Op 1 Week... Sep 2 2008ilestone attained: BMI below 30!****
I weighed myself this morning and I am 191.5lbs just 1 week following my StomaphyX. This brings my BMI to 29.99, thereby achieving my first milestone post StomaphyX which was to move from the BMI obese category to the overweight category. My total weight loss is 13lbs in one week. I can really notice the difference in my face and stomach. I feel much happier about myself.
My next milestone is to reach 185lbs by Sep 9, exactly one week from today and two weeks post StomaphyX. That means that I need to lose 6.5lbs. In order to accomplish this, I'll need to get off my rump and walk. Thus, I pledge to walk 15 min every day. I have been fairly unsuccessful in achieving the 30 min walks so I will break it down into a smaller goal and once achieved, will work my way up to the 30 min walks.
I slept very soundly last night and as a result I am feeling refreshed today. Perhaps not a ball of fire yet but certainly not experiencing the tiredness I have been across the last few days since my StomaphyX.
Here is my meal plan for today.
- Early morning: Cup of coffee with 1/2c soy milk and 1 oz half and half and 2 packets Splenda.
- B: Protein drink made of Syntrax Whey Nectar lemon, liquid vitamins, magnesium citrate lemon, and 1/2 serving of Profect pineapple orange. I also take sublingual B12 every day.
- L: 1/2 c low fat vanilla yogurt blended with 1 scoop ON Gold Standard 100% Whey chocolate
- Metabolic: Popsicle, sugar free
- D: 1/2 c Progresso split pea with bacon soup with 1/2 c cooked mushrooms added, pureed.
- 代谢:花草茶2包代糖和1/4 scoop Syntrax Whey Nectar lemon.
This meal provides: 719 calories 10.3g fat 53.3g carbs 105.2g protein.
