There are certain foods that people with UC should avoid entirely before bed, says Javelli. Some things to avoid within two hours of sleeping include:

- Alcohol, which can disrupt normal sleep cycles and cause loose bowels

For example, sleeping on the side where your bowel is most inflamed can cause some people to have diarrhea, Dr. Yen says. “Some patients will realize this and figure out they can only sleep on their stomach, or on their back, or on their left side,” Dr. Yen says. As with other sleep strategies for UC, it may take some trial and error to discover the right sleep position for you.
