What Happens When You Chew Adderall?
My daughter chewed her dose of Adderell as soon as I put it in her mouth. I didn't get the chance to tell her to swallow the dose instead of chewing. Will this have a bad side effect?
Answer
Thank you for your question and welcome to Health Central's ADHD Community.
I am not a medical professional and would not be able to give you medical advice. Because there are several different forms of Adderall (long-acting and short-acting) and both will react differently when chewed, you may want to speak with your pharmacist about whether the medication your daughter is taking should be chewed.
If this is a short-acting Adderall, the main difference in chewing and swallowing may be that the medication will take effect quicker and your daughter might get a "burst" of the medication and then have it level out.
If this is an extended-release medication, your daughter should not chew the medication as it should remain intact in order to be slowly released into your daughter's blood system.
Again, it would be best to speak directly to your pharmacist as he would be aware of exactly which medication your daughter is taking and would be better able to advise you.
