经过Tracy Davenport, Ph.D. Health Writer

Choose Fruits and Vegetables

Eating more fruits and vegetables is key, according to Lisa Wood, Ph.D., head of nutrition research in the Priority Research Center for Healthy Lungs at the University of Newcastle in Callaghan, Australia. “Increasing your intake of fruit and vegetables is a great weight loss strategy because they replace other foods that have more calories, like cookies, cakes, or potato chips,” she says. “Fruits and vegetables are also very high in nutrients, which helps reduce inflammation,” a hallmark of COPD. Next time you feel like noshing, put down the nachos and try a leafy green salad topped with sliced berries instead.

A reduction in muscle, known as muscle wasting, is associated with COPD. Several factors contribute to muscle wasting including lack of exercise, malnutrition, oxidative stress, and systemic inflammation. This loss of muscle is associated with higher mortality and cost to patients with COPD according to a 2021 study in the journalRespirology。According to Wood, “Along with increasing your fruit and vegetable intake, it is also important that you keep up your protein intake with dairy products and lean meats.” The American Lung Association recommends eating a good source of protein at least twice a day including milk, eggs, cheese, meat, fish, poultry and nuts and beans to help maintain strong respiratory muscles.

Consider Nutritional Counseling

Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics websitehas a feature that allows you to put in your zip code for a list of registered dietitians in your area.

Chill Out When Possible

Sleep More

Many of us have grown up with the understanding that sleep is time when our body is completely at rest. That is only partially true. While our muscles are mostly still, our brains are very hard at work when we sleep: balancing out hormones, restoring our moods, and clearing our minds. The bottom line is that being short on sleep can sabotage your weight loss efforts. When our hormones are out of balance, either due to an over-active mind causing stress or lack of sleep, it can make losing weight much more difficult. If you are struggling with your sleep, it may be time to talk to your healthcare provider. Your doctor may be able to adjust your treatment to make you more comfortable at night.

If you eat more calories than you burn, you gain weight. If you burn more calories than you eat, you lose weight. In general, if you cut 500 to 1,000 calories a day from your diet, you'll lose about 1 pound in a week. However, depending on how you are feeling, you might not be able to do as much physical activity as you did in the past. Your weight loss may take a little longer. For this reason, you need to develop a mindset more like a marathoner instead of a sprinter, pacing yourself and focusing on the long-term.

Don’t Give Up
